The Disarmament and Security Centre | Te Whare Maukāroko (DSC) calls on the New Zealand Government to acknowledge the genocide in Gaza, recognise the State of Palestine, and impose comprehensive sanctions on Israel.
Across Aotearoa, public conscience has been clear: a 20,000-strong march in Tāmaki Makaurau demanding sanctions, faith leaders peacefully occupying the Finance Minister’s office in Wellington, and nearly two years of weekly protests across the motu. Internationally, there is growing condemnation from legal experts about the genocide that is taking place. Belgium, Ireland, Malaysia, Slovenia, and Spain have now joined South Africa’s case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. This week, Australia, Andorra, Belgium, Canada, France, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Portugal, and the United Kingdom recognised the State of Palestine.
Meanwhile, the New Zealand Government continues to prevaricate. This ongoing inaction is damaging New Zealand’s international reputation and does not reflect the views of most New Zealanders, who want our nation to act with courage and principle. It is also in breach of New Zealand’s international legal obligations. Accordingly, the DSC calls on the New Zealand Government to:
- Acknowledge the ongoing genocide in Gaza and fulfil its obligations under the Genocide Convention to do all in its power to prevent and to punish the perpetrators.
- Recognise the State of Palestine and its right to self-determination.
- Impose immediate and comprehensive sanctions on Israel.
We also implore the Government, media, and public to resist all forms of dehumanisation — whether of Palestinians, Israelis, or any people. History shows that once human beings are reduced to enemies or abstractions, atrocities follow. The DSC stands with those working tirelessly to end this genocide. New Zealand once led the world by standing against nuclear weapons and apartheid. We must find that same courage now.
