π Five Years of the Nuclear Ban Treaty! πβοΈ
β
Today, 22 January 2026, we celebrate five years since the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) entered into force β a historic step toward a world free of nuclear weapons. To date, 74 countries have ratified this treaty. Back in 2021, supporters gathered at New Brighton Pier in Christchurch, including students, academics, long-time campaigners, and even some anti-nuclear dogs joining in the excitement! Across Aotearoa and globally, events in Auckland, Wellington, and Geneva marked this historic day.
β
Five years on, nuclear-armed states remain outside the treaty, but the TPNW has already shifted power, changed conversations, and shown that collective action works. There is still a lot of work to do β but today we celebrate how far weβve come and the hope this treaty brings for a safer, nuclear-free future.
β
The TPNW has:
β
Made nuclear weapons illegal under international law
β
Placed nuclear justice at the centre of global debates, giving survivors a voice
β
Challenged the myth of nuclear deterrence
β
Made discussions on nuclear weapons more democratic
β
Pressured financial institutions to divest from the nuclear weapons industry
