Beginning with a small group of peace campaigners in Christchurch, New Zealand, a global movement grew into what became known as the World Court Project. On 8 July 1996, their efforts culminated in the International Court of Justice’s landmark Advisory Opinion, which found that "the threat or use of nuclear weapons would generally be contrary to international humanitarian law."

Thirty years on, as international law is increasingly challenged and sidelined, this kōrero reflects on the enduring power of citizen-led movements, and how they continue to shape global legal and political change across generations and issues.

We are joined by two movement leaders: Dr Kate Dewes ONZM, one of the pioneers of the World Court Project and co-leader of its International Steering Committee; and Solomon Yeo, Campaign Director of Pacific Island Students Fighting Climate Change, whose campaign helped secure a landmark 2025 ICJ Advisory Opinion on climate change, for which the movement was awarded the Right Livelihood Award.

Together, they explore the connections between these movements across time and space, what has changed in the role of international law, and what lessons can guide the next generation of global justice advocacy.
